Screaming in horror. Almost.

This is a rant post. Don’t blame me if you feel like screaming in horror after reading this. Read ahead at your own risk.

Selfie Backdrop Change
What’s real about pictures anymore?

So Google tells me there are selfies of various kinds from #Ussie, #Uglie (Why? Oh why?), #Belfie, #Helfie, #Delfie, #Felfie, (I swear I am not making these names up.) #Wealthie and I’m tired!

Adding to all of those trending hashtags is a new way to click selfies – with the Vibe S1 (I am not sponsoring the product. Geez.) which will let you change the backdrop of your selfie. Wait, what?

So apart from the fact rumour that most selfies are staged and photoshopped and airbrushed and filtered and doused-in-all-other-photography-technology-related-words, we can now change our selfie backdrops.

Wanna bet which is going to be the most trendy backdrop? The Oscar red carpet pitched against the Eiffel Tower of Paris with your loved one? Or will it be snow capped peaks competing with the Victoria’s Secret runway? Who wants reality anyways?

Intolerance? Us Indians? Nah. Never.

For all those unaware, India has been discussing exactly how intolerant we are, as a country, for the past couple of months. Bans are trending, people are giving back awards felicitated on them by the Government (irrespective of the fact that the awards were given by political parties which are currently not even in power), people are being killed for their eating habits, politicians are rallying for food choices and animal (read : cow) protection like never before.

So Aamir Khan said this “Kiran and I have lived all our lives in India. For the first time, she said, should we move out of India? That’s a disastrous and big statement for Kiran to make to me. She fears for her child. She fears about what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels scared to open the newspapers every day. That does indicate that there is a sense of growing disquiet.”

So who really was afraid of India’s increased activities of intolerance? Kiran or Aamir? From whatever little English I understand, I think he just conveyed what Kiran said. And probably what millions of us say in the confines of our homes and safe havens of our thoughts. But refuse to admit openly. Because we are tolerant.

And for a country which is bashing Aamir for wrongly calling intolerant, are we in reality being tolerant towards his right to free speech? Latest updates show he’s being asked to leave India and his religion (of course!) is being held responsible for his thoughts (which, surprise, were actually Kiran’s thoughts.) Why did we not rise in defiance the same way when politicians said the most disgusting things about women being responsible for being raped and calling rape a ‘mistake’ which boys are allowed to commit? Why did we not ask for them to be thrown out of the country or ask for their resignations? Oh, right. Because WE ARE TOLERANT.

By the way. #IStandWithAamirKhan.

Are you bleeding? Get out. Oh, you can’t bear children? Get out.

With due respect to everyone’s religious sentiments, why would you infringe on a woman’s privacy and her faith in such a drastic way? For a country which celebrates the union of the fertilized egg and sperm in the grandest ways possible, we do treat the unfertilized egg as harshly impure. In spite of science having busted the menstrual taboos and myths over and over again.

#HappyToBleed, yes. Always.

NYC subways have rats! Eeks.

Another selfie news? No, no, not at all. Didn’t you notice the most important bit of information in this piece? Even NYC subways have rats! Time we globalized the Clean India Campaign?

Oh and confession time. I did scream at horror at what the rat did. Almost.

Graciously Yours!

P.S. : Do share what you think after reading this. I really, really want to know if you screamed.

  1. Wow. I think this is your most riveting blog yet. I have long loved the idea of India, although the reality is far, far different and something I’ll never know like an Indian citizen. Most of us equate India with Ghandi and with its past as a British ‘property.’ Or we smile at TV characters like Rajesh in The Big Bang Theory. But the underbelly is something quite different.
I guess it is for every country. Foreign internet friends always tell me they believe America is all richness and luxury. Not so. Equality and peace. Not so. But when you are born in a country, you tend to love it and therein lies the hope for all of us: to work at change from the inside, because we can’t abandon what we know and love.
And BTW, I’ve heard it said that men fear menstruation because it’s a sign of where humanity’s true power lies. “Women have no power? Only the power of creation. Fear them.”
Okay, my rant is now over, too. 😉
    Excellent posting.

    1. Oh thank you so much.
India is brilliance unequivocal, yes, but like you said every nation has a dark underbelly and that’s most visible to the ones residing there. Think of Japan – each person I’ve met speaks so highly of Japan and their mannerisms and good nature. But Japan also reminds me of all those comfort women and their continued struggle with the government.
And I love what you have to say about menstruation and men’s outlook towards it. That could be it actually. Maybe these offensive attacks are all they have been doing since ages to defend themselves. Alas, even women have stopped seeing menstruation as a bodily function. A lot of women in households here don’t let their menstruating daughters (and selves) sleep on beds or enter the kitchen during their cycle. It still happens. Both in rural and urban households. Good news is that more women are questioning these norms and refusing to follow them.
So there is hope after all. 🙂

      1. There is always hope. I where a pendant that says ‘Dum spiro spero.’ It means ‘While I breathe, I hope.’ Still, it’s so strange to see how far humanity hasn’t come in attitudes of race, sexism, etc. Maybe in a few hundred years things will be better…
Just keep writing. Raising awareness with your words is a powerful tool that can help make those changes happen more quickly.

      2. I love the quote you mentioned. It’s worth a tattoo 😉
There will always be people who’ll be causing us all to wonder if history has ever taught us anything. But the very fact that there are people who’re thinking such a thing, is a sign of change. Isn’t it?

    1. I don’t understand how we call ourselves tolerant if we can’t tolerate a simple comment made on the current news by a celebrated actor. People are sending across messages about abandoning Aamir’s latest film. I’m waiting for the film to release and go on to earn a couple of hundred crores. Then we’ll see who has the last laugh 😉 it’s going to be so much fun! Haha!

  2. Well…I was laughing at the last one . Great observation 😉
Also, the the caption, ‘what’s real About pictures anymore ‘ is good. I didn’t know selfie had diversified into so many new names 😉

Thumbs up for this post 🙂

  3. Brilliant, brilliant post Adi. I’m proud of you for speaking your mind. I’m not going to comment on the intolerance issue because you know I really don’t want to go to Pakistan. Which makes me think one thing. Is there something we can say that will offend people and make them say, “Hey you, go to Italy, because I really want to go to Rome.”

    1. Thank you so much! 🙂
Yeah you’d rather not comment because I wouldn’t want you to be dealt with ‘tolerantly’. Have these people ever even opened the dictionary to check what tolerance means? And what happened to free speech? And why is this even a point of discussion for as long as three days?
So if we start a #gharwapsi campaign for Sonia and her offsprings, is there a chance of visiting Italy? 😛

    1. Haha! Thanks! Rats creep me out mostly, except Jerry of course, but then there are no real Jerry’s, are there? And rats taking selfies is much more than my imagination can take 😉

      1. See! This is what happens when they don’t teach us to distinguish between rats and mouses, and rabbits and hares, and turtles and tortoises! I end up embarrassing myself :/

  4. I can feel what Aamir is feeling too. But…in which country will Aamir go , ‘where intolerance isn’t present’. First country in anyone’s mind would be ‘America’ right? Where any random guy can go to any random religious place got random gun and killed random people. Yes, Aamir wouldn’t prefer this. There is no chance for middle East because they are middle East. No discussion. China tagged as a “Atheist country” of course Aamir would chose to stay this. A country where Muslim majority state is being forcely migrated by Chinese people. now only one place left for Aamir. Of course Moon. I’ve heard that he has already plot a 200*220 plot there.

    1. Hey Kishan!

I respect your sentiments about the issue and also your knowledge about current pressing issues all around the world. But don’t you think we sort of stretched the Aamir comment a little longer than necessary? The guy said his wife was worried and thought about leaving and that he was appalled at the suggestion.
Now Obama could say the Earth is becoming inhabitable and that’s a pressing issue which we need to look into. That in no way means he’s bought a one-way ticket to Mars, would it? We just need to start working on curbing climate change is what that should be construed as. But that’s just what I think and understand of the English language and it’s numerous possible connotations of every sentence. I’d like to know your take on the same.

Oh and by the way, welcome to the blog! 🙂

      1. Thanks for welcoming. I’ve actually viewed his video today. And I couldn’t agree more that whats he said is right. But in his interview he was too much thinking before making any point unlike Shahrukh (he spoke from his heart.) He used name of his wife as a shield. That’s what I thought at the time he spoke. I might be wrong, I guess.

      2. Well, let the past remain in the past. What I’m awaiting is how well Dangal will perform at the counters! His popularity isn’t going to go down because of whatever shit happened in the country in the past two weeks. I’m sure about it!

      3. Me too. Unless this shit throwing will improve his movie’s popularity. And he’ll earn more. Haters gonna hate, lovers gonna love
