Silently he stood, wrinkled eyes wide, mouth pursed,
Putting together the world piece by piece.
The trees had grown up only to be sheared,
The jungles turned into concrete.
The view from his window of nesting birds,
Had been replaced by hoardings of beautiful girls.
The balcony of the next house never opened,
The children too busy becoming ‘smart’.
A school bus stopped by their building,
The mother busy typing, blind to the child’s smiles!
The ice cream vendors had died out over the summers,
The playground became the lover’s park.
He would miss the view from his balcony,
However changed it may have become.
The truth of life still scared him,
Now that the doctors had given up too.
Who knew what would entail his death,
Would he be happier there, or just not unhappy?
Graciously Yours!

Isnt this the story of every city in urban India? And of people of a certain age who a die a little bit every single day with this steady decay? I’m going to repeat scribblingsheet’s siiiiiiiigh here, with a longer exhale… Nicely captured & written, though!

Hi Kunal.
I often wonder with ever passing year, are we becoming better or worse? The future should be better than the past, right? That’s what the strive is for, isn’t it? All I see is just strife all around. Unfortunate but sort of true. *sigh*
Oh and thanks 🙂

I’m afraid the latter… Unfortunate, but all our own doing

The view from the balcony has changed with passing time and it has changed for worse…but still we love it, a piece of dear earth… 🙂
“just not unhappy” I love the phrase here…

Thank you so much, Ma’am!
Calcutta has a lot of open balcony houses and you can virtually see the saddened faces sitting there staring at the changes which happened… It hurts.

Hey tiny tot,
Boards had been replaced by the hoardings of the beautiful girls.. Good obserbations. Change is inevitable. Whole dynamics changed and will keep changing in this weird world.:(

Hey Upen!
I think you mean *birds, not boards 😉
My poems don’t rhyme as well as yours do! But I try :p
Thanks for letting the poem make you think…

Hey AdiC!
Loved the poem’s theme. I think change would start from ones own home. Its little things people do which matter !
And I liked the observation you made on on nesting birds being replaced by hoardings.
Great job as usual! Hope you’re doing great. Happy blogging 🙂

What are we looking forward to — I am so not sure. This poem just scared me a tad bit more than I already am of the future.
Reality check it was, Aditi.

You are such a brilliant poet ! I loved this part the most :
The ice cream vendors had died out over the summers,
The playground became the lover’s park.
Urbanisation has led to such a massive change in the natural beauty
